Loby Lam is a movement artist whose life is his practice. His improvisation journey began in 1991 with piano — learning by ear, teaching students the spontaneous magic of music, and playing in three bands. Hip-hop came next: breakdance crews motivating each other to develop original movement, style, and technique. Theatre followed in 2004 — five years with ProDeo (Theatersport, University of Twente) and Roest, then founding his own group Vreemdwild in 2009, organising street performances with students from AKI/ArtEZ.
Running parallel, he completed a Bachelor's in ICT specializing in Gaming & Security (2001–2006). During this time he became vegan for ethical reasons, recognising that non-human animals share in play, emotion, and connection — though the vystopia that came with it was an ongoing mental battle. His belief in connection through play led him to coaching at Iederwijs Twente, inspired by the Sudbury Valley School model. Vipassana retreats deepened his mindfulness practice, and a minimalist outlook sparked a nomadic phase of backpacking and hitchhiking — during which he discovered Contact Improvisation, a form that resonated deeply with his belief in authentic connection.
He traveled the globe to explore CI: Hong Kong (Kongtact Square 身隨意舞), Budapest (SIN & Kontakt Budapest), Berlin (k77, inTouch), Krakow, Groningen (Random Collision), Amsterdam, and Göttingen (Contact meets Contemporary, Osterimprofestival). This led him to found Kahbam in Enschede — a space to bring together the many perspectives of movement and discipline he had gathered.
Inspired by CI founder Steve Paxton's Aikido background, Loby expanded into martial arts. He has practiced Aikido since 2014 under Siavash Derakhshan, influenced by Christian Tissier, and achieved 2nd Dan in Tokyo in 2020.
Today, Kahbam reaches beyond Enschede — with invitations to teach in Morocco (Rabat), the Dutch CI Festival, Contact meets Contemporary, Living Village, and Fusion Festival. Collaborations include Clini Clowns, ecstatic dance, balfolk, zouk, anthroposophical youth groups, Tankstation, and movement research for the Dutch film Straat coaches versus Aliens (dir. Michael Middelkoop).
In honor of life, for all living beings, for the sake of play.
